GM has appointed Chris Liddell as vice chairman and CFO

Chris Liddell, Microsoft Corp.'s finance chief, replaces Ray Young as General Motors Co. vice chairman and CFO. 51-year-old Liddell, who has been Microsoft's CFO since May 2005, had previously revealed that he was leaving the software firm on Dec. 31. This is another case of an outsider being brought into GM's senior executive team at this crucial team when GM is attempting to close deals to sell key assets and regain sales momentum in the US.

Since July, GM has been operating under a new board vetted by the Obama administration. Since December, the carmaker has been headed by a new chief executive, Ed Whitacre, who had spent a career at telecommunications provider AT&T. GM had been looking for Young's replacement since at least September. Young filled the CFO position in March 2008. He takes over for Fritz Henderson, whose Dec. 1 ouster pushed Whitacre up to the interim CEO post. Before Liddell joined Microsoft, he was CFO at International Paper Co. and before that, was CEO of Carter Holt Harvey Ltd., a New Zealand wood and paper products company.
