General Motors Co. anticipates sales of 11.2 million to 11.7 million light vehicles for 2010, a marked improvement over the old forecast of 10.7 million to 11.7 million. Mike DiGiovanni, GM's executive director of global market and industry analysis, said that the leading economic indicators are "pointing to a robust recovery." DiGiovanni added that the company had raised the bottom of the range due to increased confidence in the strengthening economy. GM's new forecast makes it comparable to Ford Motor Co.'s expectations of US sales of 11.5 million to 12.5 million units. Ford CEO Alan Mulally said that this figure includes about 200,000 medium- and heavy-duty trucks. DiGiovanni said that its January sales will finish at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of between 10.7 million and 11.0 million light vehicles after having accounted for Toyota's suspension of sales on eight models. This compares with a 9.8-million-unit sales rate last January and 11.9 million last month.
