GM in talks with BAIC about a partial sale of assets tied to Saab

2010 Saab 9-3Despite indications that General Motors Co. is open to a partial sale of assets to China’s Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp., Saab is hopeful that a buyer will be named for the entire company. Two sources said that BAIC is not interested in acquiring Saab’s production hub in Trollhattan, Sweden.

What makes this move so threatening is that if BAIC succeeds at acquiring the tools and technology for an older generation of Saab cars for production in China, this could result in a liquidation of other assets held by the brand. Essentially, this puts more than 3,000 Saab jobs in Sweden in danger. In an interview with Reuters, Saab spokeswoman Gunilla Gustavs said that the company has “seen quite some interest over the last week or two” to purchase the entire company but she declined to go into further details. Meanwhile, Union leader Paul Akerlund said he had received no information that even hints at BAIC wanting to pick and choose from Saab’s assets.
