GM offering 45-day discounts to customers of closed dealerships

A group of rejected General Motors Co. dealers are up in arms over the carmaker's promotional scheme that offers 45-day discounts to the 950,000 customers of its closed dealerships. Beginning Nov. 16, customers of those stores that have shut down or lost a franchise have received letters indicated that they qualify for discounts from $1,000-$2,000 on most models of its four surviving US brands.
GM's letter stated that the amount of the discount depended on the customers' likelihood to buy a GM vehicle and the distance to the closest dealer. The leader of this group of closed dealerships has called this move to be "inappropriate" and in bad timing especially in light of the ongoing negotiations over a possible restoration of their rights. Company spokeswoman Jordana Strosberg said that the discounts are GM's way of keeping its customers in the GM family by "making it easy" to get back into a dealership. It is unclear what the impact this GM offer has to the negotiations with the rejected dealers. [via autonews]
