GM offering huge incentives to speed up the sales of remaining Saturn and Pontiac cars

To increase December sales, Saturn and Pontiac dealerships are being enticed with huge incentives by General Motors Co. to hurry up the sales of the remaining inventory from these brands, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. GM sent a letter to these dealers, stating that they would get paid $7,000 for each new vehicle on their lots that is moved to rental-vehicle or service-vehicle fleets. Under this plan, the vehicles would be classified as used cars since the dealers would be their first owner. This would later enable them to sell those cars at a steep discount. The offer expires on January 4, which is the last day of the December car sales month. The Wall Street Journal further said that GM will book the sales to dealers as fleet deliveries. As a result, GM's December car sales would increase. As part of GM's restructuring, GM is in the process of dropping its Pontiac and Saturn brands and selling Hummer. Since September, GM failed to enter a deal to sell Saturn; GM chose not to sell Opel; the sale of Hummer to a Chinese company has been delayed; and Saab is now facing closure.
