GM planning to build small car at Orion Assembly plant in Michigan

There are reports indicating that it looks like GM is making a new small car available in Michigan which will be built in their Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan. The new small car is speculated to either be the Chevrolet Spark or the upcoming replacement of the Aveo. Models like the Chevrolet Malibu and the Pontiac G6 are being built in this plant. With the upcoming demise of the Pontiac brand, the plant will have lots of extra capacity to it.

This is also true for other plants like the ones in Janesville, Wisconsin and Spring Hill, Tennessee which were also vying for building the small car of GM. The current hurdles GM is facing concerning the building of the small car are costs of manpower and logistics. From a logistical perspective, the Orion plant would make better sense because the stampings for the Spark will be made at a facility located in nearby Pontiac, Michigan. The Orion Township has provided GM $44 million in incentives which will save the carmaker $250,000 every year for the succeeding twelve years or so.
