GM Powertrain to double engine manufacturing capacity by 2013

General Motors Powertrain aims to expand production and double engine manufacturing capacity at its Hungarian plant by 2013 from 460,000 units each year, according to a report from the daily Nepszabadsag last Tuesday. Sources said that production will soon include four new engine models, adding about 700 to 800 workers to the current 600-strong workforce in the western town of Szentgotthard. In a Reuters interview, Edit Legradi, a spokeswoman for GM Powertrain Hungary, said that GM has yet to decide with regards to investing.
She said that there is still no project decision and that for now, this is an opportunity “that may end up in Szentgotthard or another factory in Europe."
She didn’t discuss details about the cost of the investment. GM Powertrain, which produces 1.6 and 1.8 liter petrol engines in Hungary, plans to roll out 220,000 engines and 270,000 cylinder heads in 2010.
The report also revealed that Audi, which recently purchased a new plot of land next to its factory in the western town of Gyor, will also expand production in Hungary from 2012. The paper said that the construction of a new 800 million euro Mercedes-Benz plant in the town of Kecskemet was moving according to schedule. About 2,500 jobs are expected to be directly created from this investment.
