GM preparing to release the Chevrolet Cruze Wagon in the United States

Chevrolet sold 231,732 Cruze units in 2011 in the U.S. All of the sales came from just one configuration --- the four-door sedan. But spy photos reveal that General Motors is now preparing to release the Cruze wagon. The rear portion of the wagon was stretched by several inches while a tailgate with a sloping rear window was added. GM had previously decided that a Cruze variant would skip the U.S. market.
Chevrolet’s highly practical and appealing five-door hatchback version of the Cruze is only offered outside the U.S. However, GM won’t say if the Cruze wagon would be sold in the U.S. If it does get offered in the U.S., its rivals would be small, affordable wagons from Hyundai (Elantra Touring) and Volkswagen (Jetta Sport Wagon).
The model that replaces the Elantra Touring will be presented at the Chicago Auto Show next month. Hyundai executives gave hints that the redesigned car would be marketed as a hatchback and that the "Touring" name would be dropped.
