GM speeding up the development of delayed vehicle programs

Now that General Motors Co. has emerged from bankruptcy, it seeks to hasten the development of programs that had been put off. Already, GM has scheduled the sale of the next generation Chevrolet Malibu to begin in two years whereas in August, it had been slated for a 2012 debut. GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz said that as soon as GM gets out of bankruptcy and has enough available money, it will move forward many of its programs.

However, Lutz didn't identify these programs. Lutz gave these statements at a press preview last Wednesday to display some of Chevrolet's future vehicles that illustrate its marketing strategy. It is still undetermined where or when the Malibu will be unveiled. From the start of the year until November, a total of 142,194 Malibus had been sold, representing 25% of Chevrolet's US car volume. Due to the economic downturn in this industry, Malibu sales have dropped 11% while the Impala, the division's topseller, plunged by 38%. [via autonews]
