GM to announce this week where the Volt batteries will be built

Confirmation of the location of General Motors' new plant where battery packs for the Chevy Volt would be built is expected this week. Last January at the Detroit Auto Show, GM's Rick Wagoner said that the plant would be in Michigan. The location was kept under wraps but it was presumed to be near Detroit since the bulk of the battery packs, which will be assembled at the Detroit-Hamtramck factory, makes it disadvantageous to place it at a considerable distance. Several weeks ago, it was speculated that the plant would be in Brownstown Township south of the city. GM's Bob Kruse announced last Friday that GM would be using its $105.9 million share of the battery grants to build the facility. Using a $151.4 million grant it received, LG Chem, which will supply the cells for the pack, will build a separate factory to produce those cells. [via autobloggreen]
