GM to begin selling cars on eBay today

GM eBay LogoAvailable through eBay Motors starting today are some of General Motors’ Chevrolet, Pontiac, GMC and Buick models. Piloting the program are 225 of GM’s 250 California dealerships. While the auction site facilitates the sale, the transaction will actually be handled by a nearby dealership.

Some of the auctions will be held with a “buy it now” price, while others will be bid-style sales. Potential car buyers can ask the dealers and work out financing methods through the site. The partnership with eBay includes two new URLs to access the GM portal of eBay Motors, as customers can enter throughgm.ebay.com and chevy.ebay.com however, deals can still be accessed through the main eBay site. While GM’s company-wide involvement in the program is new, dealership participation in eBay Motors auctions has been going on for years. The difference now is that functionality is added to the process, while giving dealers a greater online presence. Notably, Cadillac is not included in this program. It’s believed that GM wants to give the premium treatment for buyers of its luxury cars. The trial program is set to expire on September 8.
