GM to design and manufacture its own hybrid electric motors

General Motors Co. will design and manufacture its own electric motors for its hybrid and electric vehicles. This move is evident of its intention to take control of its electrification strategy. GM will be placing these motors inside its next-generation rear-drive, two-mode hybrid vehicles, specifically full-sized trucks arriving in 2013. Peter Savagian, GM's engineering director for hybrid and electric architecture, said that the motors will be used in a future range of rear-drive cars. The motor is about 25% smaller and the output about 20% higher than the one used in the current generation two-mode hybrid. Savagian did not elaborate except to say that the new motor will use less electricity, resulting in better fuel economy. GM presently offers a two-mode hybrid in such vehicles as the 2010 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV and Silverado pickup. They average 21 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
