As part of General Motors’ plan to build out its own global IT infrastructure, it has announced that 500 information-technology workers will be hired to staff a new center located in Austin, Texas. GM is in the early phases of its plan to give its global IT system a major overhaul. About 90% of this system has been outsourced to big vendors like Hewlett-Packard Co. GM wants this ratio to be reversed by having 90% of its IT work done internally within five years. This change will mean that thousands of jobs will be created. In a statement, GM said that the Austin location is the first of maybe four “innovation centers,” where workers will “drive breakthrough ideas into GM vehicles and business processes globally.” GM will hire software developers, business analysts and other IT workers. Randy Mott, GM’s chief information officer, was hired this year to be the overall chief. Mott has previously headed similar in-sourcing efforts like the CIO at H-P and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. During a conference call, Mott informed reporters about the Austin center. He said that the company is working hard to “drive the innovation and development capability of IT inside GM.” Mott said that this transformation will boost efficiency and produce ideas and innovation that are better than what GM gets from having vendors manage its IT system. He declined to name the type of work that the Austin facility or other centers will do. Mott said that in its five-year plan, GM may hire slightly fewer than 10,000 IT employees.
