A General Motors Co. Information Technology Innovation Center will be opened in Warren, Mich. Within the next several years, GM will hire as many as 1,500 high-tech employees to support GM’s new approach to IT services. The GM Michigan Innovation Center is the second of four Innovation Centers that GM is planning to build in the U.S. Last month, GM announced the opening of the first facility in Austin, Texas, where 500 new IT jobs will be formed. The IT Innovation Centers have a pivotal role in GM’s overall IT business strategy. GM wants its IT services to offer new capabilities that will aid the company in improving its performance, bringing down the cost of ongoing operations and raising the level of innovation given to GM customers.
In line with this plan, GM is switching to a more in-sourced IT business services model as part of its overall IT Transformation. Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group in San Jose, Calif., said that GM is implementing an IT best practice by insourcing IT services and making them a strategic part of guaranteeing that GM stays as a quick-moving leader.
He also said that IT professionals get a chance to work in the automotive industry. The positions that are available include software development, project management, database management and business analysis. For these jobs, GM is enlisting new college graduates as well as experienced professionals. The recruiters will be going to U.S. college campuses this fall and will be joining local job fairs aimed at IT professionals.
