General Motors Co. is set to start producing the Chevrolet Volt electric car starting next year and will be investing $336 million at its Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant. Assembly of Volt prototype vehicles will begin in the spring while regular production is scheduled for late 2010. The plant currently has about 1,200 workers, with 1,100 of its hourly workers represented by the UAW. The investment brings the automaker's combined spending in Michigan related to the Chevy Volt plug-in car to $700 million.
