From Vice Chairman Tom Stephens, the task of global product planning has now fallen to the lap of CEO Ed Whitacre. However, Stephens continues to wield control over product development, including design, engineering and purchasing. Automotive News reported these changes, citing a company memo. Spokeswomen Sharon Basel and Katie McBride confirmed the news and emphasized that the changes didn't result to any employees departing from the company.

Steve Carlisle, who has been named vice president of global product planning, now reports directly to Whitacre. Carlisle has worked in GM product planning outside the US and in GM's truck group. Since March, Carlisle had worked as GM's vice president of US sales operations. He replaces Jon Lauckner, who had been head of product planning since August. GM revealed that Lauckner would head its new venture capital unit, and will be reporting to Vice Chairman Steve Girsky. Meanwhile, Carlisle's role in sales has shifted to Don Johnson, who will report to Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.

A newly created position of vice president of global strategic product alliances has been given to Dan Hancock, GM's vice president of global powertrain engineering since 2005. He will concentrate on joint ventures and will report to Stephens, who now heads global product operations. Hancock is replaced by Jamie Hresko who will report to Stephens. Hresko, an electrical engineer by training, had been vice president of global quality since September 2008 and prior to this, has worked in manufacturing in various capacities. Before this shakeup, GM has made major changes in sales and marketing. [via autonews]
