Gordon Murray Design and Toray Industries to enter technical partnership

Gordon Murray Design has agreed to venture into a technical partnership with TORAY Industries that originates from the TEEWAVE AR.1 launch at the Tokyo Motor Show last month. The partnership will focus on several key areas, such as the further development of Gordon Murray Design's iStream manufacturing system, the joint research and development of processes and materials, and the exploration of more opportunities for the materials of TORAY in the automotive sector. TORAY Industries has recently commissioned Gordon Murray to design and build a fully functioning prototype 2-seater electric sports vehicle, which was later on named as the TEEWAVE AR.1. This vehicle presents TORAY's fundamental approach on sustainability and high efficiency.
It also uses a whole range of the automotive products of TORAY in its construction, such as the TORAY advanced eco-materials and carbon-reinforced plastic technology. In addition, TEEWAVE achieves ultimate performance characteristics, thanks to a weight of only 846kg (the lithium-ion battery included), advanced crash structures and carbon-fiber composite panels.
The technical partnership presents an opportunity for the two companies to merge their core capabilities to achieve technological advancements in the utilization of carbon fiber and other core materials in volume production as well as in the further development of automotive safety, structural thermoplastics and advanced crash structures. With this agreement, significant advantages are made in terms of light-weighting, cost, efficiency, sustainability and safety. Professor Gordon Murray, CEO & Technical Director of Gordon Murray Design Limited, commented that working with TORAY on the TEEWAVE program was a "great platform" to launch a technical partnership from. He added that they look forward to working with TORAY on "many more" revolutionary technology programs.
