This is the first image of Honda's NSX racer that has been released. While it is true that Honda's flagship sports car is being seriously considered for production, it's possible that it is preparing a race version codenamed HSV-010. This vehicle is slated to participate in next year's Japan Super GT Series. Also, it is possible that it will have the same front engine, rear drive layout as the road version, but it will most likely not use 4WD.
According to a Honda insider, when the announced that it was canceling the NSX project in late 2008, an R&D team was actually testing the car at Suzuka Circuit. At the time the car was canceled, it was actually complete and ready for the road. Meanwhile, Honda has been fine-tuning the car for racing ever since the production version proposal was scrapped.
The NXS race was actually intended for the track. At the November issue of Japan Auto Federation's motorsports booklet and the listing for next year's GT500 class, it was clearly stated that a special Honda machine named the HSV-010 will compete in next year's championship. What this means is that Honda will be racing with a car that is not based on a road-going car, a first for the company and rare in this sport. Its main rival will be the Nissan GT-R.
