Honda to double production of CNG-powered Civic GX in the next three years

Honda confirmed that when the next-gen Civic debuts for the 2012 year, its natural gas-burning GX model would still be offered. Honda’s natural gas-fueled Civic GX is not as well-known as the carmaker’s other green cars like the Insight, Civic Hybrid and FCX Clarity. But the fact is, the CNG-powered GX has topped the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE) list of greenest vehicles in land for seven years.

Notably, the GX is the only mass-market compressed natural gas vehicle offered in the US. Don’t get confused with the “mass-market” term though since the GX has only sold less than 2,000 units in 2009. Elmer Hardey, Honda's senior manager of alternative vehicles, said that sales of CNG vehicles are expected to grow, not only in California but nationwide.

He said that within the next two or three years, Honda is thinking about doubling production in the next two- to three-year horizon. Honda is targeting consumers who want to move away from petroleum. Honda claims that if the consumer wants to distance himself from oil and use a US-based resource, natural gas would be a good fit. [source Autoblog Green via Hybrid Cars]
