Due to the risk that the power steering fluid in its Acura TSX sedans would leak and cause an under-the-hood fire, Honda Motor Co. announced that it will recall 167,255 of these sedans that were sold in the US. In particular, the recall covers 2004-2008 model year Acura TSX vehicles with 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engines. There had been one fire reported because of leaking fluid that resulted after the power steering hoses cracked over time.

In a statement, US safety regulators said that power steering fluid could leak onto a hot exhaust pipe that will produce smoke and cause a burning smell. There’s a risk that this would result to a fire under the hood.

In a report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that Honda will notify US Acura TSX owners that its dealers will repair the Acuras free of charge, starting on May 28. Honda said that the repair requires the installation of a new power steering hose, O-ring gasket and fluid.

Honda officials have confirmed that cars in Canada are not involved in this recall.[via autonews - sub. required]
