There is at present a hybrid model of the Audi A3 that is being developed under the VW TwinDrive program with a hybrid Golf also being planned. Power source for the hybrid A3 will be a 105bhp 1.6-liter, 4-cylinder diesel unit coupled with a 30kW electric powerplant for a front-wheel-drive, along with two 30kW in-wheel electric units driving the wheels at the rear. Even for short distances only, the new car is classified as a four-wheeler.
The electric units are driven by a 12kWh lithium battery pack located in the floor of the trunk, as well as power generated via regenerative braking. The batteries can be recharged through regular power outlets. The TwinDrive on the Golf is able to drive to a range of 31 miles on electric power alone at a speed of 75mph tops.
In combination, the diesel and electric power plants raises the top speed to 106mph, while fuel consumption is claimed to be in excess of 113mpg. Although there are some speculations suggesting that the A3 TwinDrive could come by 2012, no details on availability have been confirmed by the carmaker.
