Hyundai and Kia boost their sales using fleets

Kia Logo

Amazingly, both Hyundai and Kia continue to maintain, and in some instances increase the number of units they sell as other car manufacturers are reporting a double-digit drop in theirs. One contributory factor to this unusual sales performance, considering that all other carmakers are suffering losses, is the fact that the company sells large numbers of cars which are going straight to rentals and corporate fleets. In the first three months of this year alone, of the 95,854 units sold by Hyundai, 33 percent of them were related to fleet. Sales of cars for rent are represented by about 35 percent of Kia's sales for the first quarter of the year. Although there is nothing intrinsically wrong with the selling of fleet vehicles, there are some in the industry who view this as a historically abused method of increasing sales numbers and is, therefore, not an accurate representation of actual showroom traffic, and a potential risk for outstanding values. Hyundai says that they accept this criticism, but they also pointed out that their retail sales is also going up and has surpassed the industry as a whole.
