Korean carmakers Hyundai and Kia set sales records in the U.S., driven by the momentary slump of primary Japanese rivals Honda and Toyota. Hyundai posted a 20% hike in sales in 2011 to 645,691 units in 2011. It also logged a 13% year-on-year increase in December sales to 50,765 units. Kia, on the other hand, posted a 36% increase in U.S. sales in 2011 to 485,492 units.
It also recorded a 43% year-on-year increase in December sales to 43,390 vehicles.Best sellers are the Optima (84,590 units) for Kia and the Elantra (186,361) for Hyundai.
The companies experienced a shortage in supplies in 2011 due to high demand. The shortages are expected to continue this year and may hamper the companies’ growth.
