Hyundai Blue-Will Concept coming to Detroit Auto Show

Hyundai Blue-Will Concept

Hyundai's first hybrid - the Blue-Will Concept - will be showcased at the 2010 North American International Auto Show. There is speculation that the model will arrive at the US market as soon as 2012. However, there's no confirmation on what its release date around the globe would be. The Blue-Will Concept is powered by an all-aluminum gasoline direct injection 1.6l engine, mated onto a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and a 100kw electric motor.

The car also gets power from the panoramic roof's integrated sensitized solar cells. To maximize luggage space, the battery pack is fitted, together with the fuel tank, under the rear seats. Hyundai reveals how fuel-economic the vehicle is.

The concept is capable of going as fast as 38 miles (60 km) in electric mode only, while fuel consumption ratings stands at 106 mpg (2.2l/100 km) in plug-in mode and up to 55 (4.2l/100 km) in hybrid mode. At an event earlier in the year that had revealed the concept car, Yang Woong-chul, president of Hyundai-Kia Motors' research and development division, said the carmaker is not necessarily trying to make money on hybrids."
