The small-car segment in India will soon be swarming with global rivals but while Hyundai Motor Co. expects to face tougher competition, it is confident that it will continue to be a top player due to its big volumes and extensive sales network. With a 16% share, Hyundai is the No. 2 brand in the fast-growing Indian market due mostly to a strong lineup of small cars such as the i10 and i20 hatchbacks.

Hyundai is unfazed despite big global players such as Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. revealing plans to enter the dominant subcompact segment.

Hyundai Motor India Director Arvind Saxena asserted that a solid sales network is vital to becoming a big seller. At the Delhi auto show, Saxena was interviewed and he said that a market as big as India is very difficult to cover. He said that Hyundai has a deeper penetration and it is spread out in about 260 cities with 286 dealerships and 80 sales branches. He added that Hyundai planned to expand to 320 dealerships and about 130 branches this year.
