An insider at Hyundai has revealed that the company is focusing on the latest direct-injection 4-cylinder powerplant and may be launching a family as early as 2011. The report said that the unit is an enhanced variant of the 2.4-liter Theta II I-4 being used in some Hyundai models. Without direct-injection technology, the 2.4-liter unit can generate 175hp, but with the new fuel delivery system it can bring that number up to 200hp while at the same time return a better fuel economy rating. It is speculated that the first model to come with this new engine is the 2011 Sonata which could be released at the LA Auto Show later this year making it the only model, at present, to have such a fuel delivery system.
