Hyundai pulls out of Japan
Hyundai Motor Co. is successful everywhere else except Japan and as a result, it is pulling out 46 of its dealers in the country. Hyundai has only been in Japan for eight years but as spokesman Oles Gadacz says it, “mass-market players have it very tough.” The notification to the dealers is set to be sent out on Dec. 1.
Gadacz explains that very few brands prosper in Japan. Since 2001, Hyundai has sold only 15,095 passenger vehicles in Japan. In fact, Volkswagen AG, the biggest selling import, was only able to sell 61,996 units in 2008. Hyundai doesn’t have much to complain about however, since the brand is achieving incredible sales in most countries. A 7.2% increase in sales was recorded globally, while a 4% increase was reported for US sales.
