The upcoming Tokyo Motor Show from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4 will be a shadow of its old self. The latest automaker to pull out of next month's motor show is South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Co. Organizers say that Hyundai informed them last week of its intention to cancel its participation. Toyokazu Ishida, who administers the international exhibition for the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, said that he received the call on Sept. 25.
He commented, "It's unbelievable." Hyundai's exit follows the Detroit 3's announcements earlier this year to drop out of the show. Held every two years, the Tokyo show was once the premier auto event in Asia.
However, major foreign automakers were hit hard by the recession and have chosen to sit this out to cut costs. Hyundai's departure leaves only two minor foreign manufacturers: German boutique manufacturer Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen and British sports-car maker Lotus.
