Hyundai reveals rendering of proposed US headquarters in California

Hyundai Motor America has unveiled a rendering of its proposed new U.S. headquarters building in Fountain Valley, California, that represents an investment of $150 million -- the company's largest amount ever spent on an office building in the U.S. The building has been the automaker's base of operations in the U.S. for the past two decades. It is designed by the world-famous architecture and design company Gensler.
The building will be targeting the gold level of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, which is a green building certification process recognized worldwide in assessing the sustainability of a building's construction, operations and design.
The design is contemporary and sleek, yet classic. It is built on a structural pedestal foundation with floating translucent glass floors above it. The focal point of the building is its remarkable two-story high entrance, which leads to a public courtyard in the center. From the freeway side of the new structure, a showroom of Hyundai automobiles will be seen.
The new building will be six stories high and around 419,000 sq. ft. A one-story technical services facility, which has an area of 50,000 sq.ft., connects to the main building. An adjoining parking structure will also be erected on the site. The demolition of the old headquarters building on the 405 San Diego Freeway is underway.
Construction of the new building is set to start in spring 2012. It is projected to produce around 1,530 jobs during the 19-month building process. Completion of the construction is estimated to be in the fall of 2013. During the demolition and construction, employees at Hyundai Motor America will be in a temporary office space in Costa Mesa, California.
