Hyundai, Kia supplier Hanwha planning to expand its Ala. plant

2010 Hyundai ElantraNo one is even the tiniest bit surprised that the auto supplier of Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. is expanding. Hanwha L&C Corp. will soon start work at its Opelika, Ala. Plant, its second expansion in less than two years.

Hanwha, which supplies Hyundai’s Alabama plant and will supply Kia Motors Corp. when its Georgia plant opens in 2010, plans to invest $11 million to add space, equipment and 25 employees in Alabama. Headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, Hanwha molds glass mat thermoplastics and expanded polypropylene for bumpers. In 2005, Hanwha opened under the name Maxforma Plastics LLC and in 2008, it invested $14 million to add 42,000 square feet. Once the expanded portion opens, Hanwha L&C’s investment in Opelika would then total $43 million and the plant would have the area of 145,000 square feet, which is the average size of a Wal-Mart department store. This space will be used for additional production for the auto industry as well as packaging for electronics and the items for the building industry.
