Hyundai tweaks the Genesis V8 engine for 2010

Hyundai LogoHyundai may have two completely redesigned models debuting in the next few weeks, but it won’t leave its carryover models alone for the 2010 model year. Its engineers have modified the 4.6-liter V8 in the Genesis sedan and got an 10 horsepower more from the Tau to generate peak output of up to 385 hp at 6,500 rpm.

Hyundai Technical Center powertrain director John Juriga recognized that the performance stats will be retained, but drivers will be able to sense the increased grunt. It isn’t only the output that was changed; the car also now has improved refinement and driveability of the V8. To attain its goals, Hyundai added a two-step variable induction system that varies the flow through the intake manifold at low and high rpm, along with continuously variable valve timing on both intake and exhaust, larger valves, and a chromium nitride coating on the pistons to reduce friction. Dealerships are advised to prepare for the updated Genesis sedans to arrive later this year.
