Infiniti planning new sports car, report says

Infiniti Essence Concept

Amid rumors that Infiniti is planning to produce a super-coupé similar to the Essence concept car, boss Toru Saito admitted that he does want to produce an out-and-out sportscar. But according to Autocar, Infiniti has bigger priorities to attend to. At the Paris Motor Show, Infiniti showcased the latest version of its M35h hybrid, which rivals the new BMW 5-series. Infiniti also admitted that it plans a European expansion.

It said that it intends to create a rival for the Audi A3 and BMW 1-series and to build a luxury electric hatchback based on the Nissan Leaf.

Saito declined to give details about the vehicle that will rival the 1-series but it hinted that this car is likely to be front-drive and might even feature a Mercedes-Benz platform, after the recently announced tie-up between Daimler and Nissan-Renault. In an interview with Autocar, Saito said that Infiniti is considering the option of sharing and stated further that the front-drive is possible.
