Iveco wins the 2012 Dakar Rally

Iveco 2012 Dakar Rally

Iveco had a convincing win at the 33rd Dakar, getting the first, second and sixth positions in the overall truck ranking. The event is considered the most important rally in the world and is joined by most of the Asian and European truck OEMs. The Petronas De Rooy Iveco team finished the rally in flying colors with the Dutchman Gerard De Rooy behind the wheel of an Iveco Powerstar, a vehicle manufactured and sold by Iveco in Australia.

The automobile is powered by an FPT Industrial C13 engine, which provides at least 900 horsepower. It also has Magneti Marelli components. The two other players of the team, Biasion and Stacey drove two Iveco Trakker Evolution 2s, which are also fitted with the same engine. The three automobiles were standard trucks, which are manufactured to be optimized for best-in-class energy efficiency. They are also built to adapt to the intense conditions of the rally.

For Iveco, the Dakar 2012 provides a great chance to confirm the reliability of its products on the ground, considering that each automobile was tested in extreme conditions crossing three South American countries. The rally started on January 1, 2012 in Mar del Plata, and it covers 14 stages with a total of 8,500 kilometers. About 4,200 kilometers of the total distance were raced against the clock. The course runs across Argentina, Chile and Peru.

Iveco CEO, Alfredo Altavilla, commented: “The Iveco participation in the Dakar 2012 aimed to confirm once more the excellent reliability of the Iveco trucks and of the FPT Industrial engines. Winning the rally and ranking 3 trucks in the first 6 positions is an outstanding success which shows the efficiency, strength and safety of the Iveco Trakker and Powerstar, already considered by customers as the ideal solution for everyday use and for tougher challenges. My special thanks to the drivers and all the other team members for their commitment and dedication.”
