Jaguar preparing its first hybrid XJ saloon

A variant of the next generation XJ, which will be the first electric-powered luxury saloon, is about ready to be introduced to the world by Jaguar. This transpired after the EU decided to grant aid for the new green technology last week. The four-door Jaguar XJ will utilize similar technologies found in the Chevy Volt and the Vauxhall Ampera. Both cars are powered by batteries that can be charged primarily by connecting to the grid but which can also be recharged by a small engine while moving.
The target of the company for the green car is an electric-only range of 30 miles, 57mpg fuel consumption, less than 120g/km CO2 emissions and 112mph maximum speed. Jaguar has made a commitment to begin production in 2011, a year after the launching of the next generation XJ. Low curb weight will be guaranteed by Jaguar's own alloy body technology, while its electric power unit is being developed in collaboration with MIRA and Caparo of Lotus Engineering.
The EU offered a GBP307 million loan which was cleared by the European Investment Bank last week to boost JLR's investment on green technology to 800 million Pounds as it attempts to lower total emissions by 25 percent by the year 2012. Part of the loan will go to the development of full hybrids, micro-hybrids, small diesel powerplants and "soft-turbo" gasoline units. [via autocar]
