Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Jaguar XJ_e plug-in hybrid, the first hybrid research vehicle developed by the British company now owned by India’s Tata Motors. Just like the Range_e, the Jaguar XJ_e plug-in hybrid is powered by a fuel-efficient 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine (borrowed from the Range Rover Evoque) mated to a hybridised 8-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, we find a 69kW motor/generator and a 12.8kWh Lithium Ion battery pack which can be fully charged using a 240V domestic supply in around four hours. Using just the battery, the vehicle has a range of 40km (25 miles). The hybrid system delivers a total output of 334PS and has a fuel consumption of just 3.2l/100km (87mpg) translates into a maximum range of 1092 km (679 miles) on a full tank of fuel. In terms of performance, the XJ_e plug-in hybrid is fast as it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in under 6.5 seconds and has a limited top speed of 250km/h (150mph). According to the official press release, the Jaguar XJ_e plug-in hybrid investigates how the 5.0-litre V8 engine can be replaced by an advanced 2.0-litre hybrid powertrain. For those who don’t know, Jaguar already replaced the 5.0-liter V8 engine on the 2013 XJ with a supercharged V6.
