Jeep pickup is still a few years away from production

Jeep Gladiator Concept

After Jeep dramatically presented a pickup concept last September at a dealer event in Orlando, fans have been very excited and different Web sites have speculated on when it will arrive. However, Jeep insiders recently said that it is not yet a sure thing that the pickup will go into production and there isn’t a date yet on when it will be offered. Last September, Jeep CEO Michael Manley had said, “You never know what might show up in your showroom someday.”

Manley left the stage and a pickup concept appeared briefly from behind the curtains. The enthusiasm remains high at Jeep to build this pickup but the sources said that Jeep has priorities that have to be resolved first, aside from financing.

One hurdle is likely to be apprehensions from Ram that Jeep will steal their pickup sales away. This is a real concern as Jeeps and Rams are sold in the same showrooms. Chrysler is also experiencing a shortage of engineers. It was announced earlier this month that Chrysler is looking for 1,000 additional engineers. It’s to be expected that the carmaker currently has limited capability. [via autonews - sub. required]
