Jenson Button joins Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
2009 Formula 1 champion Jenson Button will be driving for the McLaren team for the 2010 season. Button’s stated reason for leaving his Brawn (or Mercedes-Benz) GP team is because he wanted to set fresh challenges for himself. Button said that it was a difficult decision to leave a team that he has been a member of for so long.
That’s of course what Button is expected to say at this point. Sources say however that it may have something to do with a paycheck. At Brawn GP, Button received close to $4 million a year. It’s speculated that Button was demanding almost $6.7 million a year, a figure that Brawn/Mercedes-Benz apparently wouldn’t agree to. While details of the contract are unknown, sources believe that the McLaren deal is worth close to $10 million. With Button’s addition to the team, McLaren now has a “dream team” of F1 drivers. Button, alongside 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton, forms an all-star, all-British lineup.
