The winner of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps is McLaren's Jenson Button whose performance has not been so impressive lately. After Button qualified to be on pole position, he sped into an early lead as a commotion took place behind him. Lotus’ Romain Grosjean had moved across the track from side to side and had clipped the second McLaren of Lewis Hamilton, setting off a terrible multi-car shunt that took out Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez. This also eliminated Kamui Kobayashi who was in the front of the grid for the first time. After getting past a pitstop, he was able to rejoin but the Sauber didn’t have some bodywork parts and its aerodynamics had been compromised.
The race had resumed after a long clear-up operation but Button was unstoppable as he continued to gain ground while the others fell behind him as they angled for a better position. The unpredictable weather at Ardennes had made teams come short on dry-track running. The race order got mixed up because of the various strategies and car set-ups.
World champion Red Bull Racing driver Sebastian Vettel also performed well in the race. After starting at No. 10 on the grid, he drove aggressively and was able to move up to second position by the end. Vettel and Button were the only participants in the race to succeed in using a one-stop strategy. The others who tried it experienced severe wearing of their tires in the last stages of the race and lost time.
