A joint venture between two leading global battery producers - France-based Saft Groupe SA and Milwaukee-based Johnson Controls Inc. - will be supplying lithium ion batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles, which are to be manufactured by Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Beijing Auto will start producing later this year an evaluation fleet of 2,000 EV versions of the M30 compact crossover and the C30 compact hatchback.

A product launch is planned for 2012, CEO Dazong Wang of Beijing Auto said in a written statement. He added that the company expects to manufacture 150,000 units of EVs and hybrids by 2015. On a single charge, the EV versions of the M30 and C30 can travel more than 62 miles.

In 2010, Johnson Controls revealed a major expansion of lead-acid battery production in China, where it produces 3 million batteries per year. The company is expending $500 million to establish four new plants in the country that will produce as many as 30 million batteries annually by 2015.
