In spite of the hesitation of Toyota to release plug-in hybrid variants of its famous Prius hatch, there are numerous companies that are eager to sell retrofitted versions. Another company, Jungle Motors in Orange County, California, which has been transforming Porsche 911s and Chrysler PT Cruisers to electric power for quite some time now, has just made available its PHEV Prius. The firm has made a factory that carries out the conversion so all the owner needs to do is to drop off the car. Subsequently, the driver has a choice of Normal Prius Mode, Enhanced Prius Mode and Battery-only Mode. The last option, obviously offers totally petroleum-free function. At present, Jungle's conversion employs old-tech lead-acid batteries that only permit an EV operation of 10 miles. The company intends to provide lithium iron phosphate power packs in February next year that will boost EV range to 40 miles. The lead-acid conversion will cost $4,995 exclusive of installation.
