Kia is planning to add a second shift at its manufacturing plant in Georgia on Oct. 1 to build the 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe, Automotive News reports. Apparently, Hyundai will transfer production of the Santa Fe SUV from its plant in Alabama, which also builds the hot selling Sonata-sedan, to Kia's plant in West Point, Ga., which currently builds the Kia Sorento CUV. This move comes after Hyundai’s plant has been running on maximum overtime for months in order to meet the demand for the Sonata sedan. A limited production of the 2011 Santa Fe is set to begin on Septyember 27, before the second shift is activated. The Hyundai Santa Fe shares the same platform with the Kia Sorento, but Kia built only 69,332 units at the plant through Saturday, Aug. 21. The plant capacity is over 300,000 units annually.
