Kia to launch a sporty coupe within the next two years
In line with its plan to have a car in all major sectors in the next 5 years, Kia will soon launch a sporty front-wheel-drive coupé, according to an unnamed senior official. The sports coupe, which is based on the Cee’d platform, is currently in the early stages of development. It will be released within the next couple of years.
The source also said that the focus is on “establishing the brand as a serious player in the UK.” Possible venues for the launch include Paris next autumn or at Detroit in early 2011. If you’re curious about the design of this sports coupe, you only need to look at Kia’s Kee concept from 2007 to get an idea. Peter Schreyer, Kia’s European design chief, said that Korean executives have already approved its design. Meanwhile, sister firm Hyundai has announced that it intends to put the Veloster concept — a front-wheel-drive coupé based on the i30 — into production within the next two years. The Kia coupe is geared to be a direct rival to the Veloster and to undercut the Peugeot RCZ and Audi TT.
