2011 Kia Sportage

In Slovakia, Kia Motors Corp's output in the first half of the year increased by over 67%, boosted primarily by the launch of the Kia Sportage and ix35 from sister brand Hyundai. Kia Slovakia was named as the fourth-biggest exporter last year in the euro-zone country. It operates an assembly plant in the northern Slovak town of Zilina with an annual capacity of 300,000 vehicles.

In a handout provided to reporters, Kia said that the Slovak site produced 107,000 vehicles in the first half of 2010. Kia also restated its plan to produce more than 200,000 cars for the entire year. In 2009, the Slovak site made 150,020 vehicles.

The Slovak car industry is a major driver of the heavily export-reliant economy, which decreased by 4.7% in 2009 and is expected to increase between 3% and 4% this year. Slovakia has assembly plants operated by Volkswagen AG and PSA/Peugeot- Citroen SA. The factories in Slovakia and Czech Republic that are being run by Hyundai Motor Co. and sister company Kia serve as a base for sales in Europe.
