Scheduled for sale as 2010 models next year, the latest Cayman and Boxster can be pointed out from the other models by their slightly modified headlights, air intakes, and LED tail lights. This is the first time that both versions are offered with Lights Package highlighting bi-xenon headlights, active curve lights and LED daytime driving lights.
The fog lights are replaced with LED lights; on the Boxster four LEDs are placed side by side, while on the Cayman they are arranged in a circle. The prominent feature of the latest series is the most current flat-six boxer motors designed with fresh engineering attributes from the ground up, offering not just extra power, but also considerably greater fuel economy than their precursors.
The addition of the new Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) dual-clutch gearbox also enhanced both fuel efficiency and performance. With a displacement of 2.9 liters, the base engine now generates 255 hp (188kW) in the Boxster and 265 hp (195kW) in the Cayman, an improvement of 10hp and 20hp, respectively in contrast to the preceding versions.
The 3.4-liter power engine in the S-versions, taking advantage of the direct fuel injection, now provides 310 hp (228 kW) in the Boxster S and 320 hp (235kW) in the Cayman S, up by 15 and 25 hp, respectively.
This shows that there is currently a power-to-weight ratio ranging from 4.2kg (9.3lb)/hp on the Cayman S to 5.2kg (11.5lb)/hp on the Boxster. As a consequence, the Cayman S that comes with PDK and launch control featured in the optional Sports Chrono Package can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in just 4.9 seconds, making it the fastest of the range.
At the other end of the spectrum is the Boxster, which comes with a six-speed manual, which takes 5.9 seconds to cover the same distance. Equipped with PDK, for the first time both the Boxster and the Cayman offer fuel-economy below 9 liters per 100 km. The 2.9L models with the PDK are the most economical in the lineup, generating fuel-economy of 8.9 liters per 100km (or 26.4mpg).
Cars outfitted with the 3.4L engine have a 9.2 liter per 100km (or 25.5mpg) rating. The mechanical changes are not restricted to the powertrain as the cars also get a fresh suspension set-up. Alterations of the valve control map on the steering transmission serves furthermore to decrease steering forces, providing the Boxster and Cayman even more supple and instantaneous steering action.
The wheels come in fresh design and are wider by half an inch on the base models compared to the previous car, providing for the installation of larger brake system on the front axle. The latest models are going to be available in the market by February 2009. The bottom price tag of the Boxster will be €38,600 ($49,000), while the Cayman will begin at €41,700 ($52,830). The Boxster S, in the meantime, will begin at €46,700 ($59,170) and the Cayman S will be listed at €51,500 ($65,200). Their availability and price tags in the U.S. are yet to be announced.
