2010 LA Auto Show: Lotus Elise Concept

Article by Christian Andrei, on November 19, 2010

Expected to officially debut in 2015, Lotus’ Elise Concept was actually unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. The 2015 model will be priced at around GBP40,000 ($63,000).

The current Elise model serves as the inspiration for the 2015 Elise, which uses an extruded aluminum bonded chassis, although a bit longer and with better access.

The design is completely new and brings something from the 2014 Lotus Elite. The 2015 Elise weighs a total of 2,409 kg (1,029 pounds) and can go from 0 to 100 km/hr (62 mph) in 4.3 seconds.

Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). If you glance under the hood, you will see a supercharged 2.0-liter Toyota four-cylinder unit, which can deliver between 320 to 500 hp, depending on the specifications.

The engine will be paired to a twin-clutch manual gearbox plus Stop & Start. Buyers may also opt for a paddle-shifted automatic transmission.

For the 2015 Elise, which is an entry-level model, Lotus will not offer the hybrid KERS technology, which is used by the Formula 1 cars. Like the current model, the 2015 Elise will be available as a roadster or a coupe, while a sporty “R” is in development.

Group Lotus CEO Dany Bahar revealed that the Lotus Elite is not just amazing to look at but it can deliver even in all the other aspects. Bahar added that it is indeed a car that is an example of perfect contradictions. It offers high performance yet has low emissions. It is lghtweight but continues to be solid and compact.

Also, it remains spacious. The company is proud of this car and when it comes to style and performance, there is nothing like it, Bahar further said. Without a doubt there is a clear market for the Lotus elite as it has a sports car feel that also offers space and comfort, Bahar continued.

According to Bahar, some people will always claim that the Lotus should stick with small sports cars. However, when the company designed the Lotus Elite, it was not decided lightly as it was founded on months of research and planning. This particular segment has been successful for the company in the past and the Lotus Elite just increases that benchmark even higher.
