Lamborghini reveals new 700 hp V12 engine and ISR transmission

Lamborghini New V12 Engine

Lamborghini revealed today the details and photos of its all-new V12 engine as well as its new ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) transmission. The new powertrain will enter production early 2011, and will be available on the new Lamborghini Murcielago successor a.k.a. Aventador a.k.a. Urus/Jota. As expected, the new twelve-cylinder engine with 6.5 liter displacement delivers 700 hp or 525 kW, as well as a maximum torque of 690 Newton meters.

This engine will be mated to the new ISR (Independent Shifting Rod) automated manual gearbox that combines minimal shift times and everyday usability with low weight and dimensions. According to Lamborghini, the new gearbox is with almost 50 percent shorter than with a dual-clutch transmission, and combines extremely fast shift times with the benefits of manual shifting.

Instead of taking place in series, as with a conventional gearbox, shifting can occur virtually in parallel. While one shifting rod is moving out of one gear, the second shifting rod can already engage the next. Moreover, the transmission weighs only 79 kilograms – a distinct benefit, even against comparable DSG transmissions, which are considerably heavier.” stated the press release. The new Lamborghini Murcielago successor is expected to make its official debut in March, at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.
