Zircotec, the automotive coating specialist, will be providing Automobili Lamborghini a high performance thermal barrier intended for its lightweight Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce. The thermal coating, termed the Thermohold technology, which is ceramic based, will be applied to the car's exhaust system to minimize the need for heat shields while at the same time enabling heat sensitive lightweight elements to be utilized as close as possible to the exhaust without damage to their components. This is not the first time that Zircotec has been involved with Lamborghini in this fashion, since previously it also did some protective work on the Reventon involving the body work and components near the exhaust.
On the Murcielago, the technology did not only help protect the parts of the car, but it also spelled over 100kg of weight savings. The carmaker is fully satisfied with Zircotec's Thermohold technology not only in its weight-saving capability but also because it's durable and it has more than satisfactorily come up with the Lamborghini standards with regards to performance and quality.
The technology works by significantly inhibiting heat transfer from exhausts and catalysts keeping the heat inside the system and therefore protecting the surrounding components externally in relation to the system. Since the coating is plasma-sprayed to the heat source, the resulting effect is that it strengthens the base material and preserves it from heat cycling, abrasion and life testing. It is so effective that it cancels the need for heatshields, and gets rid of excess weight. The thickness of the coat applied is dependent on the heat generated by a particular part. For hotter surfaces, thicker coatings are applied.
