Lamborghini will not see sales picking up again until new supercar is launched

Lamborghini’s full-year revenues are expected to suffer because production of its high-performance Murcielago had been stopped six months ago. It’s anticipated that sales will pick up only in the second half of 2011 with the launch of a successor supercar, according to CEO Stephan Winkelmann. Lamborghini, a unit of Volkswagen AG's Audi, ceased building the $400,000 Murcielago last May. In an e-mail to Reuters, Winkelmann said that its sales performance will be affected. Lamborghini struggled during the global economic crisis.
Even with the continuing growth in Asia, the carmaker’s first-half sales dropped by 2.6% to 152.9 million euros ($216 million). In 2009, sales had dropped 41% to 281 million euros. Winkelmann said that returning to the record levels seen in 2007-2008 will not be immediate, especially when you consider the slow demand from markets like Europe and the US.
Winkelmann expects the recovery to start from the second half of next year. In 2008, Lamborghini sold a record 2,430 cars. Named after a fighting bull, the Murcielago is Lamborghini's top-selling 12-cylinder car. It has delivered over 4,000 units in nine years, 409 of which were sold in 2009. [via Reuters]
