Land Rover has tremendous growth potential, says Tata Motors boss

At the SMMT annual conference in London last week, Tata Motors boss Carl-Peter Forster talked about the Land Rover as having tremendous growth potential. He added that the carmaker has to enter more market sectors. He also mentioned the possibility of starting to build cars outside of the UK. He disclosed that Tata Motors, Jaguar Land Rover's parent, will need to launch a new-model campaign that would have more models joining to the Evoque. Meanwhile, the current models will be overhauled to offer smaller petrol and diesel engines and hybrid power. As a result of the overhaul, it's expected that Tata, Jaguar and Land Rover will share more components.
For instance, the next Range Rover that's due in 2013 will likely be based on a similar aluminum structure to that of the current Jaguar XJ. As part of JLR's growth plans, 1,700 engineers will be recruited, about 50% higher than the current number.
He also said that he is undertaking a review of Tata's manufacturing structure that mean that Land Rovers and Jaguars might be built in India or China. Nevertheless, Forster remains certain that JLR will not transfer engineering base and that the development of all Land Rovers and Jaguars will remain in the UK. He was quoted to have said that engineering of the next XJ won´t happen in India.
