Land Rover planning a smaller and sportier crossover to take on MINI

2012 Range Rover Evoque

According to the latest reports from AutoExpress, it appears that Land Rover is currently working on a new crossover, smaller than the recently launched Evoque, which will take on cars such as the rumored Bmw X4 or the MINI Canyon, a three-door version of the Countryman, the Nissan Juke and the Bmw X1. In addition, the car will also be cheaper than the Evoque and it will cost around £25,000 or $40,000.

Just like the Evoque, the new car is expected to be offered with a choice of front-wheel drive or a more efficient four-wheel-drive. Regarding the engines, expect a four-cylinder diesel engine featuring stop-start technology, delivering less than 120g/km of CO2 emissions.

Still, the car is expected to receive a more powerful gasoline engine. As you may know already, the top of the line Evoque is offered with a 2.0-litre Si4 petrol engine delivering 240 hp.According to Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern, the new model will be firm’s answer to a changing market. The model will be inspired by the avantgarde styling of the Evoque. In fact, the new car will be an opportunity to take the British brand back to its roots, but in a modern way.
